Description
A trio of small silver discs etched with a partial spiral dangling from silver earring wires. Inspired by a Late Neolithic carved stone from Barclodiad y Gawres chambered tomb near Rhosneigr, Anglesey, North Wales.
This is a site I know intimately, having spent 180 hours tracing the carved stones within. Barclodiad y Gawres sits on an exposed headland overlooking Cable Bay and across to Rhosneigr and Holyhead in the distance. The chamber itself has been restored post excavation(1952-53) of the stones and can be viewed through a gated entrance. Unfortunately, due to vandalism, we were instrumental in having the site closed to protect the unusual carvings inside, but on certain days you can enter the chamber with a guided tour – see CADW. for more information.
The stones are decorated with spirals, conjoined spirals, zigzags and serpentine lines amongst other motifs and look to have been influence by the Atlantic style of art prevalent in Ireland at the time.
